How long is a tennis match? Measured match times

Best-of-three tennis matches had a median recorded duration of 103.1 minutes in our January to October 2026 sample, including pauses.

· By the Live Tennis API team

A best-of-three tennis match had a median recorded duration of 103.1 minutes in our January to October 2026 sample. Best-of-five matches had a median of 203.8 minutes, but that sample was small: 22 matches. We timed matches from the first live score we recorded to completion, including pauses.

These are Live Tennis API measurements, as of October 31, 2026. They give you a starting point for planning your viewing, with a limit: our clock measures the period we observed.

How long does a tennis match last by format?

The January to October 2026 format sample contains 11,972 best-of-three matches. Their lower and upper quartiles were 82.5 and 132.3 minutes. That spread is more useful for planning than treating the median as a promised finish time.

The table also separates best-of-three matches by sets played, using the January to October 2026 sets-played sample. All durations are minutes.

Match group Matches Median Lower quartile Upper quartile
Best-of-three, all 11,972 103.1 82.5 132.3
Best-of-five, all 22 203.8 171.9 242.7
Best-of-three, ending in two sets 8,368 91.1 76.5 108.5
Best-of-three, ending in three sets 3,431 146.2 127.1 168.5

The sets-played rows don't account for every best-of-three match. We haven't assigned the remaining matches a set count.

The best-of-five result needs particular care. With so few timed matches, it isn't a firm estimate for every event using that format. You can report the observed median, provided you keep its sample size beside it.

How long is a three-set tennis match?

A match scheduled as best-of-three doesn't have to reach a deciding set. This distinction changes the answer when you search for the length of a three-set match.

For matches that actually reached three sets, the recorded median was 146.2 minutes. For those completed in two sets, it was 91.1 minutes. Those figures describe different finished matches, so you shouldn't subtract them to predict how long a deciding set will take.

Even the sets-played rows leave plenty of variation. A set count doesn't tell you how many games were played within each set. Our guide to how many games a tennis match contains explains that part of the score.

Once a match is underway, use its score alongside the clock. A long elapsed time alone doesn't tell you whether the finish is close.

What is the average tennis match length?

Across 11,994 singles matches recorded in January to October 2026, the mean duration was 110.4 minutes. The median was 103.2 minutes. People often use "average" for either, but they answer different questions.

The mean includes the full weight of every recorded duration. Long matches pull it upward. The median is the middle observation after ordering durations, which makes it useful when you want a typical recorded match.

Pauses sit inside this clock, so long interruptions stretch elapsed time. Neither measure tells you how long the ball was in play.

The pooled result also reflects the matches in our sample. It isn't an equally weighted average of tour medians. If you're following a particular tour, its own row gives you a closer comparison.

How does match length differ by tour?

Here are the January to October 2026 tour results, using the same duration filters. The ATP row includes the best-of-five matches in this sample.

Tour Matches Median minutes
ATP 596 109.4
WTA 555 105.9
Challenger men 2,041 99.4
Challenger women 725 104.8
ITF men 3,951 104.4
ITF women 4,126 101.7

These counts describe our duration sample on each tour. They don't measure the API's total coverage or rank coverage quality.

For a tour comparison, keep format in view. The ATP median combines formats, while the other rows here contain best-of-three matches. Calling the difference a pure tour effect would go further than these measurements support.

Are tennis matches longer on clay?

In the January to October 2026 surface sample, clay had a median of 106.5 minutes across 3,662 matches. Hard courts had a median of 102.3 minutes across 8,128 matches.

Clay's quartiles were 84.8 and 137.3 minutes, against 81.7 and 130.8 on hard courts. The ranges overlap substantially.

These figures don't isolate a surface effect. Grass had too few timed matches to report. Our measured hold rates by surface examine service games separately.

How this was measured

The figures come from singles matches the API recorded, scheduled during January to October 2026, with 11,994 matches in the duration sample. The exact window was January 1 through October 29, 2026, based on scheduled time in Israel local time. Duration means minutes from the first live score we recorded to the moment the match completed in our feed. Matches outside 25 to 420 minutes were excluded as feed artifacts. Retirements and walkovers were excluded.

The clock includes pauses for rain or darkness. It also starts at our first observation, which isn't necessarily the opening point. Point-by-point coverage is declared per match. This is observed elapsed time, and it shouldn't be labeled official playing time.

Using these numbers

If you're planning to watch, use the relevant format's median as a starting estimate and its quartiles to judge the spread. Leave room for the match to run longer. An interruption changes the practical question from expected duration to when play will resume. Our explanation of what a suspended tennis match means covers that situation. For record-length contests, read the longest tennis matches guide. A record claim needs checks beyond elapsed feed time.

If you're building a match page, label an estimate as an estimate. Keep the live score and status visible alongside it. Use the API reference for match data when choosing the fields your page displays.

When citing these results, include Live Tennis API as the source and retain the window. Keep the timing definition attached to the figure.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the average tennis match?

Our January to October 2026 singles sample had a mean recorded duration of 110.4 minutes and a median of 103.2 minutes. We measured 11,994 matches. The clock ran from our first recorded live score to completion, including pauses. Use the format-specific figures when you know which format you're watching.

How long does a best-of-five tennis match last?

The recorded median was 203.8 minutes in our January to October 2026 sample. That result comes from only 22 matches, so treat it as a small-sample observation.

Its lower and upper quartiles were 171.9 and 242.7 minutes. Those values describe observed elapsed time, including any pauses inside the recording window.

Does match duration include rain delays?

Our duration measure includes pauses between the first live score we recorded and completion in the feed. That includes rain delays inside that interval. It doesn't separate active play from waiting. If you need playing time, these elapsed durations cannot supply it without further information about the match's interruptions.
